The lion (Panthera leo) is a majestic and iconic animal, often referred to as the “king of the jungle” (though they primarily inhabit grasslands and savannas).
Let’s know a little more about it:
HABITAT
Lions are primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa, with a critically endangered population in India’s Gir Forest National Park.
They prefer grasslands, savannas, and scrublands, which provide ample prey and cover.
BEHAVIOR
Social Structure:
Lions are unique among cats for their social behavior, living in groups called “prides.”
Prides typically consist of related females, their cubs, and a coalition of males.
Females are the core of the pride, while males primarily defend the territory.
Hunting:
Lionesses are the primary hunters, often working together to take down large prey like zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo.
Males may also hunt, especially larger prey, or in areas with dense cover.
They typically hunt at dawn or dusk.
Resting:
Lions are relatively inactive, spending up to 20 hours a day resting or sleeping.
Territoriality:
Lions are highly territorial, marking their boundaries with urine, feces, and roars.
Roaring communicates territory ownership and can be heard over long distances.
Communication:
Lions communicate through a variety of vocalizations, including roars, growls, and purrs.
They also use body language, such as head rubbing and tail movements.

FACTS AND CURIOSITIES
Roar Power: A lion’s roar can be heard up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) away.

Mane Attraction: The male lion’s mane is a sign of maturity and health. Females often prefer darker manes.
Social Grooming: Lions engage in social grooming, which strengthens bonds within the pride.
